Today is a very special day. It is Guru Purnima. On this day we pay respects to our spiritual teachers. Typically these teachers are either fully enlightened or have made strong progress along the path. In any case we are lucky to have received their wisdom and today is all about recognising the importance of our Gurus. Below are the Gurus I want to stay thank you to:
Gautuma Buddha- For re-discovering and building on the meditation techniques taught 2,000 years ago as well as formalising the Noble 8 fold path.
Sage Patanjali- Creating an 8 step Yogic system for aspirants to follow and for his work on Pranayama.
SN Goenka- Reviving the lost meditation techniques and bringing them to the masses through creation of Vipassana community. A true genius that made serious spiritual progression accessible for householders all over the world.
Ramana Maharshi- His teachings on self-inquiry to discover the true self through the direct removal of the ego.
'Gu' means remover and 'Ru' means remover of darkness or ignorance so that light and wisdom prevail. This is the reason why Guru Purnima falls on a Full Moon. Be sure to get yourself outside tonight.
